Nizozemskou skupinu Delain založil Martijn Westerholt, bývalý pianista a bratr jednoho ze zakladatelů skupiny Within Temptation Roberta Westerholta. V roce 2001 opustil Martijn Within Temptation a o rok později založil Delain.
